I so enjoyed helping mod the [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix fest again this year. The [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix fest is one of my favorites in the fandom - I love the idea of authors writing fanfic of other fanfic. Here are some recs from the fest:

favicon violet light by [livejournal.com profile] creole_toile ( R | Art ) 1-May-2017
Summary: your star, through the scars
A remix of Every Second by [livejournal.com profile] bookshop

  • This art is BEYOND stunning and hauntingly beautiful. I love the way the colors transition from one side to the other, and how the first panel has more color and "life" than the last two. Honestly, these images could be framed and put on the wall without a single change.
    (thumbnail posted to tumblr)

favicon How To Catch A Weasley (And Maybe A Potter, Too) by [livejournal.com profile] bixgirl1 ( R | 7,600 ) 17-May-2017
Summary: In which Pansy has a crush and needs Draco's help, Draco has a crush but staunchly refuses to admit it, Potter might have a crush, but is as infuriating as always, and no one knows what the hell Wealsey is thinking--likely not even himself.
A remix of Meaningless by GingerTodgers

  • This was such a great remix! I definitely loved seeing the Harry/Draco side of this story, and the author perfectly wove in all the happenings in the original and showed us how they got there, and how the misunderstandings could multiply. So entertaining!
Everything is super cute and fun, (even the summary which really sums it all up perfectly!) and we see all of the characters haplessly dancing around what they each really want. But the best part is the kiss, oh! their kiss is SO HOT. Even though the sex is offscreen, the UST absolutely sizzles.
And the banter is top notch too :)
(quote1 and quote2 posted to tumblr)
    (also recced at hd-storyroom)

favicon A Hot Cross Bundle of Draco Malfoy by GingerTodgers ( T | 3,100 ) 16-May-2017
Summary: Harry and Draco stopped doing whatever it was they were doing months ago. It's over and it hurts but it's fine because Luna has invited Harry over for tea and hot cross buns.
Pity she forgot to tell him who her new housemate is...

A remix of The Fabulous Baker Boys by [livejournal.com profile] germankitty

  • Absolutely charming and fun! I love veritaserum fics so much, and this one had all of the embarrassment and awkward confessions that I love about it, plus terrific funny dialogue too.
I loved so many lines, but maybe this one especially:
“Ginny asked you to roofie a set of buns named after a religious execution for her non-denominational party?”
    (quote posted to tumblr)

favicon Sea Glass by [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730 ( G | 2,400 ) 14-May-2017
Summary: When death comes unexpectedly the lives of loved ones are torn apart until the healing slowly begins.
A remix of The Secret of the Sea by [livejournal.com profile] persephoneapple

  • Beautifully told and lovely. Amazing how you can feel so much emotion in just this short piece. Even though it's a story of grief, there's still a hopefulness and sense of love that pervades it. So good.
I also really appreciated that this remix introduced me to the original story by persephoneapple which I hadn't read before, and was a great find.
    (quote posted to tumblr)

favicon Dogged by [livejournal.com profile] tigersilver ( R | 5,800 ) 12-May-2017
Summary: Harry knows exactly why he freed Draco Malfoy, the problem is finding the right words to describe it.
A remix of Jailbait by [livejournal.com profile] spindlerkiss

  • I enjoyed this so much! Very fun and amusingly sexy. And the author really captured the feeling of the type of scatterbrained-sex-addled thoughts a 19-year-old might have, and how they don't let themselves worry too much about consequences :)
I especially enjoyed Harry and Draco's aborted argument about Antarctica, and how Harry gave in in part because of sexual frustration :) Seeing this all play out from Harry's side was particularly funny.
    (quote posted to tumblr)

favicon Two Things About Harry Potter by [livejournal.com profile] ustorycollector ( E | 3,000 ) 4-May-2017
Summary: Draco knows two things about Harry Potter. He likes to stare at Draco, and he's got a weird thing for a piece of crumpled parchment that should be in the bin.
A remix of Map Kinks / Mischief Well Managed by [livejournal.com profile] khalulu

  • This was really delightful! I love how the author created a whole story with just a series of short vignettes - I really fit the mood of Khalulu's original drabble that way.
I think this is probably my favorite line:
"This man defeated the darkest wizard of all time. And he’s thrown by Draco complementing his arse. He’s almost begging to be teased."
    (quote posted to tumblr)

favicon The Shape of the World Is the Shape of You In It by [livejournal.com profile] megyal ( PG-13 | 3,100 ) 18-May-2017
Summary: He has dreams, and they are only small parts of a world he probably knows.
A remix of The Shape of the World by [livejournal.com profile] bixgirl1

  • This remix is so in tune with the original work, and yet also adds to it in a meaningful and important way.
I loved the dream sequences, which showed the reader how lost Harry was feeling, and how the mirror was prompting him to ask the right questions - so cool!
This was just a really lovely glimpse into characters we all wanted to know more about and a great showcase into Harry's state of mind.

I wrote a little drabble for this year's [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix fest :)

Title: favicon Bite Your Tongue
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snowgall
Pairing: Draco/Harry
Rating: R
Word count: 405
Summary: How hard can it be to cast a silencing charm?
Remix of: Bite by [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730 (intended as a prequel)
Notes: Dear [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730, I'm a huge fan and was delighted to be able to write a remix for you! Please excuse the short word count as this was a last minute pinch-hit :) Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vaysh for the quick beta, and to [livejournal.com profile] bixgirl1 for encouraging me to write again!

Addendum:

Concrit is welcome for this. Seriously, this is only my second fic, and I really don't mind advice on how to write better. You can send me a PM or comment below, and so long as your comments are constructive my feelings won't be hurt at all. Oh, and if I got any British-isms wrong I definitely want to know! Using language right is really important to me, so please do tell me if something is off.

Yesterday I got into a lively discussion with another tumblr user on the proper interpretation of one of Bucky's lines in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The line in question goes like this:

Hell, no. That little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight, I’m following him.

The original poster thought this line was illogical, while I thought it made perfect sense.

This engendered a lot of back and forth debate!

If anyone's interested in reading it, the resulting tumblr thread is here, and my follow-up post with more technical linguistic-y discussion is here.

Where my linguists at? [livejournal.com profile] khalulu ... [livejournal.com profile] shiftylinguini ... [livejournal.com profile] pauraque ... I'm sure I'm missing some :)
snowgall: (close-up)
The [livejournal.com profile] hd_owlpost fest showered us with so many lovely little fics this winter and just posted their masterlist today. So I'm taking the opportunity to rec a few fics from the fest I especially enjoyed :)

favicon Sorting Out Their Priorities by [livejournal.com profile] sassy_cissa ( NC-17 | 2,600 ) 9-Jan-2017
Summary: When a foreign dignitary makes a move on Harry, Draco does whatever is necessary to stake his claim.
The best kind of PWP. You feel like you know these characters and the situation feels warranted. Plus it's hot, super hot :)

favicon Six Christmases by [livejournal.com profile] thistle_verse ( R | 4,800 ) 3-Dec-2016
Summary: A year ago— even a few months ago— Harry would have heeded the note of warning in Malfoy’s voice. He would have been more careful. But care, he thought now, twisted and flowed with the change in landscape; like magic, it fed on a continual change of form.
This was incredibly lovely. So nicely told, and their character growth carefully built up over the years.

favicon Ribbons and Bows by [livejournal.com profile] lauren3210 ( NC-17 | 1,600 ) 15-Dec-2016
Summary: Harry comes home from work to a prettily wrapped surprise
PWP, but done very well. Hot and lovely.

favicon Heat of the Moment by [livejournal.com profile] writcraft ( NC-17 | 2,250 ) 4-Feb-2017
Summary: Harry’s never felt much like an Alpha but that all changes when Draco Malfoy turns up on his doorstep, asking Harry for help.
Hot and fun. Good ABO dynamics. Makes you wish for more :)

favicon Exposure by [livejournal.com profile] kittyaugust ( PG | 910 ) 8-Jan-2017
Summary: Snow at Christmas time can be a luxuriously tempting thing.
Lovely little scene. Very sweet, and hints at so much backstory I want to know!

favicon Christmas Presents by [livejournal.com profile] fantasyfiend09 ( PG | 1,600 ) 16-Dec-2016
Summary: Draco reflects on what Christmas has meant to him over the years.
This was beautifully told, and created a clear depiction of who Draco was then and who he is now. Really moving, especially the way Harry stood up for him in court. Pre-slash, with a not-yet-happy ending.

The Fandom Trumps Hate auction on tumblr raised over $32,000 total, divided among many worthy charities, including:

  • Planned Parenthood: $8,039
  • American Civil Liberties Union: $5,051
  • Southern Poverty Law Center: $3,300.85
  • The Trevor Project: $2,800
  • Standing Rock: $2,311
  • Natural Resources Defense Council: $1,962
  • Rape Incest, and Abuse National Network: $1,429
  • Nature Conservancy: $1,287
  • TransLifeline: $975
  • National Immigrant Justice Center: $908
  • ProPublica: $675
  • Lambda Legal: $600
  • Campaign Zero (Black Lives Matter): $590
  • Border Angels: $571
  • Anti-Defamation League: $491
  • Oxfam America: $467.50
  • RandomActs: $350.50

I don't know how that breaks down by fandom, but the HP auctions I was tracking easily raised over $700 combined. Seems pretty awesome to me :)

They're planning on making this an annual thing, so if you couldn't participate this year, there's always next year!

ETA: There's an AO3 collection set up for all the works that are being produced from these auctions. There are only 23 works there so far, but I expect this will grow into the hundreds in the coming weeks and months as authors and artists complete their projects.

As you probably know already, I'm offering beta services for the Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction. Several other lovely LJ people are offering their services for auction too; see the list I posted last week!

Bidding is currently open, but will close at 11:59 EST on Thursday, January 19. (That’s tomorrow night!)

  • Important Note: even though Fandom Trumps Hate is hosted on tumblr, you don't need a tumblr account to bid!

  • Who the auction is supporting: The charity of your choice from the list available on the Fandom Trumps Hate FAQ. Some suggestions: the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), The Anti-Defamation League, Planned Parenthood.

  • Length of Fic: for every $10.00 of the winning bid, I will beta 5,000 words (up to 50K).

  • To Bid:

Step 1: Check my bidding spreadsheet to find out what the current high bid is. (Note: It may take up to five minutes for a bid to appear.)

Step 2: Fill out my bidding form with a bid that is higher than the current high bid. If you want to make it harder for someone to outbid you, bid higher! You will NOT be notified if someone outbids you, so please bookmark this page and check frequently. You will only be notified if you are the high bidder after the auctions end.

For more details, see my contributor page, and feel free to ask me any questions!

P.S. In case you missed it, [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier is running a private auction here too.
snowgall: (close-up)
Yesterday I posted a list of all the people I knew from the HP fandom on LJ who were participating in the Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction. While Fandom Trumps Hate is hosted on tumblr, I didn't make it clear that you don't need to be on tumblr or have a tumblr account to bid! (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier for bringing this to my attention ♥)

So just to clarify, all the bidding takes place using a google form/spreadsheet that's not on tumblr, just linked to from there.

The links you need are found on each participant's contributor page (which I posted a list of links to yesterday). Take my page for example. If you click that link it will take you to a tumblr post with details of the auction I'm listing. There's a lot of verbiage, but the relevant thing is the two links near the bottom of the post where it says step1 and step 2 (copy pasting here for convenience):

Step 1: Check the bidding spreadsheet to find out what the current high bid is. (Note: It may take up to five minutes for a bid to appear.)

Step 2: Fill out the seller’s bidding form with a bid that is higher than the current high bid. If you want to make it harder for someone to outbid you, bid higher! You will NOT be notified if someone outbids you, so please bookmark this page and check frequently. You will only be notified if you are the high bidder after the auctions end.

So those are really the only links you need, and they're not associated with tumblr.

Each participant has unique links to their bidding spreadsheet and bidding forms, so you just need to be able to find those by clicking on the contributor pages in yesterday's post.

Let me know if anyone has any further questions. I want to encourage as much participation as possible :)
snowgall: (close-up)
There are over 500 people offering services for the Fandom Trumps Hate auction which is awesome, if a little overwhelming! Even just looking through the "fandom: Harry Potter" tag brings up what seems like 100 pages.

But for some of those, the creators have HP as a secondary or tertiary fandom, or say that they don't write Drarry. So I decided to sift through the offerings to find people I knew.

Since I know many of you aren't on tumblr, I've compiled a list of creator names I recognized, in case you'd like to check it out. If I missed anyone or made any mistakes, I'm really sorry, just let me know!

Offering to write fic:

Offering art:

Offering translation:

Offering beta services:

So happy to be in company with so many awesome peeps! Bidding is now open, and will close on January 20th. Hope you check it out and bid - you get to pick the charities you'd like to support!

I'm offering to beta up to 5K words for each $10.00 of bidding. Drarry and Stucky pairings preferred, but others are possible.

As I was looking over the anonymous masterlist for this year's [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised fest, I was struck by how many veterans of the HD fandom were still creating fanworks for the fest, even as many newcomers are joining for the first time. I think this speaks to how popular HD fandom has been and still remains!

So everyone can see what I mean, I've organized this year's participants into a table sorted by the year they first published an HD fic or artwork, so far as I know*

So like everyone else, I backed up my LJ to DW. Trying out this cross-posting thing now.

So it seems like LJ "friends" = DW "circle" ? And after I ported over, I now have a bunch of open-IDs listed in my "circle". I thought that these would convert into their LJ-equivalents when people crossed over, but that doesn't seem to be happening?

Example: [personal profile] oakstone730 is an LJ friend. Last night I imported everything to DW and saw her name as an openID account in my circle. This morning I saw her post about moving to DW and officially "subscribed" to her DW account. And now I've got her listed as both her DW account and her openID account in my circle. Am I doing it wrong?

Something like 10 years ago, I was rooting around in the discount bin at some video store (or maybe Walmarts - who knows?) and came across a DVD of a Special Christmas Episode of Aardman's creature comforts:

I had no idea what this was, other than being by the creators of Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, which meant it had to be good, and it was only $1.99, so why not?

My kids were all like, "what even is this?" and I couldn't really answer, so I just said we should watch it and see. And oh my god, my husband and I were dying. Of course, back then, my kids were too little to really get it, but we all watch it together now every year, and it's so fun to see them laugh more and more the older they get.

It's even on youtube now so everyone can see it :)

No matter how cynical you might be about Christmas, I'm reasonably sure this will make you laugh. At least, so long as you enjoy hearing the "Twelve Days of Christmas" song get completely butchered and over-analyzed by random British citizens impersonated by stop-motion animals.

But trust me, it's hilarious.

I had no idea, really honestly no idea about the love meme that [livejournal.com profile] lokifan hosted last month. I wasn't checking my LJ at that time, and completely missed it.

I can't believe that you kind people made a thread for me anyway, considering I hadn't been around for nearly 8 months at that point. *wants to insert shamefaced emoji but doesn't know how*

It's so very sweet and lovely that anyone took the time to do that, and I'm deeply touched and grateful. Thank you so much anonymous posters. You really made my day.

(are we supposed to comment back on the thread? or not, because it's anonymous? I want to do the right thing!)

P.S. If anyone knows of any other memes/threads/important discussions that I missed or that I should really have responded to, please do let me know.

I've been away, so this might be old news to everyone else, but I just saw this on tumblr so I thought I should share in case anyone is interested:

Fandom Trumps Hate

Fandom Trumps Hate is almost here!

What is it?
An online fanfic/fanart auction to benefit a variety of organizations helping populations targeted by Trump and his administration. (Such as the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Trans Lifeline, and the National Immigrant Justice Center.)

How does it work?
Authors and artists will sign up to offer their work at auction. The winner will donate their winning bid amount to one of the charities listed below, then send the author/artist email proof of their charitable donation. Once we know you’ve donated, the author/artist will get to work on your item! If you’ve seen previous auctions to benefit AO3 or Haiti, it’s kind of like that.

When is it happening?
Dec 19: Author/artist signups open (also electoral college votes)
Dec 31: Author/artist signups close
Jan 12: Bidding opens
Jan 20: Bidding closes (and the new president is inaugurated)
Jan 31: Proof of donation due to your author/artist

If you write fic or create fanart, get ready to sign up!
If you don’t, point your favorite authors and artists this way in case they’re interested! Either way, get ready to bid to support some great organizations!

Check out our FAQ for more info, including a list of the charities the auction will be supporting. If we’ve missed anything, drop us a note in our askbox!

Author/artist signups open December 19 and close December 31.

I've been away for a while, but tonight I decided to tackle my inbox which has been taunting me (142 messages, christ!) I've got serious inbox anxiety, and seeing that I had an avalanche of messages waiting for me actually made it harder for me to even attempt to look at them :/

But the weird thing is that easily 75% of the messages were simply LJ alerts of people's birthdays and whatnot. Apparently I've missed ALL the birthdays. Very sorry about that!

The other 25% of the messages were all nice comments on earlier entries, so as usual my anxiety was entirely unfounded, but there's no talking sense to it.

But even after going through it all, somehow or other there are still 2 unread messages somewhere in there which I CANNOT find. I went back though several pages, but I gave up after a while. So if I never responded to one of your messages, I'm also very sorry about that, and I don't know how to fix it.

The US election has gotten me seriously depressed (as if I needed any help with that!) but I've been venting as much of my anger and frustration as possible over on tumblr. Also calling my congressperson, but he's a moron and a Trump supporter, so it feels hopeless.

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm way behind on all reading too. I've mostly gotten sidetracked into the Stucky fandom, and as with most things I get into, I get majorly obsessed for an intense period of time and then I cool off again. I think I'm in a cooling-off period now.

Anyway, just thought I'd poke my head back in and say "hi".
