This may be my last rec post for some time. But the [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix fest is one of my favorites in the fandom, so I had to do one more. I love the idea of authors writing fanfic of other fanfic.

favicon The Lily, the Violet, the Tiny Babe by [livejournal.com profile] khalulu ( PG | 1,300 words ) 13-Mar-2016
Summary: From beyond the Veil, she senses that her son Harry needs her – but who is that very blond baby in his arms? Learning that she is a grandmother takes Lily on an emotional journey.
A remix of The Scent of Violets by [livejournal.com profile] sassy_cissa

  • This was a stunningly beautiful story. Seeing Harry through his departed mother's eyes is so unusual and unexpected, and yet I found it so very moving. Especially watching Lily work through her complex feelings of protectiveness, hurt, betrayal, and finally acceptance of Harry's relationship with Draco. There is so much depth here that I can't do it justice - you'll just have to read it. I really loved it. Fantastic remix.

extended rec at hd-storyroom

favicon The Thing About Cats and Dogs by [livejournal.com profile] megyal ( PG-13 | 3,900 words ) 17-Mar-2016
Summary: A very small view into the life of Harry and Draco and a cat and a dog.
A remix of Cats and Dogs by [livejournal.com profile] 8c

  • I enjoyed this so much! The wry humor in this story immediately captivated me. I loved the perfect sense of each scene - brief but fully realized - and the excellent glimpses into the complicated and delicate conversational minefields they navigate. Lovely fic with great feels - and really not so very fluffy, despite the tags :)

extended rec at hd-storyroom

favicon And Wednesday Too by [livejournal.com profile] disapparater ( R | 5,600 words ) 4-Mar-2016
Summary: Draco never expected anything better than his two dead end jobs and a cramped flat, but when Harry Potter waltzes into his life, can anyone blame him for wanting a little more?
A remix of Tuesday Nights by [livejournal.com profile] firethesound

  • Loved getting to see Draco's perspective for this story! The author really captured his inner conflict and insecurity masked with bravado, all while still keeping the sweet tone of the original.

favicon There Is Always the Moon by [livejournal.com profile] firethesound ( PG-13 | 159,000 words ) 18-Mar-2016
Summary: Draco's life after the war is everything he wanted it to be: it's simple, and quiet, and predictable, and safe. But when a mysterious curse shatters the peace he'd worked so hard to build, there's only one person he can trust to help him. After all, Harry Potter has saved his life before. Now Draco has to believe that Potter will be able to do it one more time.
A remix of If the Sun Goes Black by [livejournal.com profile] pasdexcuses

  • Holy amazeballs this fic. This fic is the most fantastic backstory to the original. It starts out strongly Draco-centric in the best way, drawing the reader into his post-war life and dedication to his work. But when something disturbing starts happening to him, the only one Draco trusts to help him is Harry Potter. Even though they've barely spoken since the war, Harry decides the best way to help Draco without raising suspicions is for them to pretend to be in a relationship (of course!) Thus we are treated to the most amazing fake-relationship story ever, where Draco is trope-savvy enough to be worried about rogue mistletoe, and they're both falling ever deeper in love. What makes it so wonderful is that we are immersed in the slow build of their relationship over the course of many months, and nothing about it feels rushed. Do note that this is a remix however, so the ending doesn't quite tie everything up as neatly as it would otherwise - it's meant to flesh out the backstory of the original.

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] capitu!

(which was really 3 days ago, but you were out of town, so we're doing this now you're back :)

I've updated the old spreadsheet I made for you last year. you can find the new one here:

Masterlist of Capitu's my-drarry-recs (updated)

Just like last time, it's a list of all the recs posted at [livejournal.com profile] my_drarry_recs from when you began on 7 May 2012 on through 14 Feb 2016. That's nearly 4 years of continuous reccing.

This year's list is a little more expansive, as in addition to the original sortable fields:

it now includes these fields as well:
  • word count
  • rating
  • summary
  • link to your rec on tumblr (if it exists)

New stats for 2016:

  • The total number of rec posts made (some of which include more than one fic*) = 1,376
  • The total number of fics recced so far (when counting sequels as separate fics) = 1,432
    * Whenever a work and its sequel were recced in the same post (e.g. The Corruption Sequence by [livejournal.com profile] beren_writes), I split that into two (or more) separate records in the sheet . So there are more entries in this sheet than there are individual recs posted at [livejournal.com profile] my_drarry_recs.

P.S. Any errors or omissions in the lists are unintentional and entirely my fault. Please let me know and I'll correct them.

P.P.S. Everyone is welcome to use the data for their personal enjoyment and create links back to this post if you would like to share, but please do not repost the spreadsheet without permission, use it for monetary gain, or take credit for the data collection. The selection, coordination, and arrangement of data contained in a database is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

What follows is a list of my picks for the best Drarry fanfiction of 2015
(37 fics, sorted by date published)

Note: There are so many lists of favorite Harry/Draco fanfiction, but I'm doing something a little different. Rather than create a list based on genre or length or era or whatever, I've decided to do a series of "best-of X year" lists. This means the year the work was published not the year I read it.

Once again, this list was hard to pare down! I read more fanfic published in 2015 than in any other year, and between my LJ blog and [livejournal.com profile] hd_storyroom, I recced 93 Drarry fics from 2015. Consequently lots of good fics aren't included on this list. In the end any list is just an arbitrary thing based on one person's no doubt flawed opinion. It says nothing about the quality of any fics not on it!

More lists:

2015 list--click to expand )

General notes:

  • The "original post" column provides links to the first place I can find evidence of the work online. However, it can be really tough to determine when and where a work was first published (see my rant here: Dates Matter). So it could be that a fic was actually published earlier somewhere else and I didn't know it. Corrections are welcome.
  • I've read a lot of HD fiction, but I certainly haven't read it all, so if I've left off something you think I shouldn't have, I'm happy for you to let me know.
  • I may continue to add works to this list but I will try to keep the total number to something reasonable. (On the challenge of maintaining lists)
  • My goal is to add lists for other years as well, time permitting.

How my fic preferences will skew the lists:

  • I tend to like fics which contain explicit sex, so the list will probably skew that way. However, I prefer that there be an actual plot, not just sex, and I read PG rated fics too--just fewer of them.
  • I like almost all the standard tropes, but I don't usually go for non-magical AUs, unhappy endings, dark!fic, or threesomes
  • I don't give a toss who's on top or bottom, so you'll find both here.
  • I shy away from epic-length fanfiction unless I'm very confident in the author, so most of my recs will be less than 100,000 words.
snowgall: (close-up)
So as many of you may know, I've previously posted lists of "Best Drarry Fics of the Year" for 2007-2014. In fact, those were some of the very first posts I ever made to this blog. It's more-or-less why I started this blog, as I was all in a tizzy about properly dating fanfics, and I felt that organizing rec lists by year of publication was one way to make some use of the data I had been gathering up to that point.

I still feel that way, and I still like making rec lists, but this year it will be SO HARD. When I posted all of those other lists, I was really new to fandom. I hardly knew anybody, especially not authors! Making the lists was an objective exercise for mostly my own enjoyment. But now I know so many lovely people in the HP fandom. Which means creating and posting my list for 2015 makes me feel incredibly anxious and concerned about which fics might get left off.

Because oh my god, some fics will get left off! By my count, I've recced 93 Drarry fics this year, between my LJ blog and [livejournal.com profile] hd_storyroom. And the number of fics I included in each of my previous "Best of the Year" lists was always less than 30! Part of the reason is that I simply read more fics in 2015 than I have in any previous years, which means I know of so many more good ones to rec. So my 2015 list will be longer than my previous ones, but I don't want it to be ridiculous. I think I've settled on ~36 fics I want to have on the list, and that's about as low as I can go.

So this is a long-winded way of saying that I'll be posting my list later tonight or tomorrow, and there will be lots of good fics that aren't included, and I already feel awful about that. In the end the list is just an arbitrary thing based on one person's no doubt flawed opinion. It says nothing about the quality of any fics not on it.
snowgall: (close-up)

So last year I did a count of how many HD fics were produced for fests in 2014. This year I decided to do a side-by-side comparison of 2014 fests vs 2015 fests to see if I could spot any trends.

The table below lists all the HP fests I know of that ran in either 2014 or 2015 and produced HD fics. The top set are HD-exclusive fests, while the bottom set are more general HP fests that included some HD fics as well. Gray boxes indicate that the fest didn't take place that year.

Note that I included two HD fests that I saw run on tumblr in 2015. I don't know of any other HD-generating fests hosted on tumblr, but if you know of others I may have missed (on tumblr, LJ, or elsewhere), please let me know!

Some boring details:

The Tables:

Table )

Observations:

  • More HD fics were produced for HD-fests in 2014 (357) than in 2015 (321)
  • Conversely, more HD fics were produced for non-HD fests in 2015 (122) than in 2014 (84)
  • When added together, the number of HD fics produced for fests in 2014 and 2015 is nearly identical.
  • There were more HD fests that ran in 2015 than in 2014. Consequently, it appears that having more fests does not seem to produce more fics :)
Anything I missed? Please let me know if I made any mistakes in counting fics, classifying fests, or in adding numbers!

There was an abundance of lovely fics, ficlets, and art to be had all through December as part of [livejournal.com profile] hd_owlpost! I was especially lucky to get three amazing gifts this year, which I previously recced here - go read :) But other people got lovely gifts as well, and so I'm reccing my favorites of the gifts that weren't for me below :)

I just saw today that [livejournal.com profile] white_serpent had uploaded two of their fabulous Drarry stories to AO3:

favicon Take These Lies ( R | 34,600 )
Repeatedly rejected by the Auror training programme, Draco Malfoy attempts an unorthodox method of gaining admission.
Originally written for 2010 [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair fest. Note: contains genderswap and dubious consent, both of which were requested in the prompt.

favicon You Can Have My Everything ( NC-17 | 8,000 )
Sometimes it takes a little pain to break through the apathy. General warnings: Rough sex/BDSM, Angst (and lots of it), 1st person/present tense.
Originally written for the 2011 [livejournal.com profile] dracotops_harry fest.

I've recced both of these before, on my "Best of 2010" and "Best of 2011" lists, as well as my Identity Unknown rec list.

I'm always so happy when fandom classics get uploaded to AO3! If you haven't read these before, now would be a perfect opportunity to do so. If you have, then go leave kudos and comments in encouragement :)

Wondering whatever happened to [livejournal.com profile] hd_owlpost? I had a slate of recs languishing in my scheduled entries which accidentally posted just a few minutes ago (sorry about that - I had it scheduled for Jan 22 thinking that it would be safe to assume the last gifts would have posted by then). I'll wait and re-post it once I know the fest is actually over :)

Help?

How do I set comments to screened? I was supposed to do this for the hd-remix check-in post, and I screwed it up.

What I did was to set "Screening" to "All" but that doesn't seem to have worked.

The options on the "Comments" pull-down list were confusing. What do I do?

Situation has been resolved. Thanks for the help!

I'm so excited to prompt for [livejournal.com profile] serpentinelion's Glompfest this year! However, as I was filling out the prompting form, I realized that I was in the process of writing a freaking dissertation on my preferences, which was way too much for submitting to a fest.

So I decided I should finally make a post detailing all my likes and dislikes in fanfic, just in case someone decided to pick my prompt (I would be so honored!). This came out so much longer than I meant it to; I am much more opinionated than I thought!

If you are so generous as to write for me and have any questions that this ridiculously long post doesn't answer, ask [livejournal.com profile] capitu or [livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion. They know what I like pretty well :)

Favorite Pairing: Draco/Harry of course!

Era:

Oh man, [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised continues to be the best HD fest of the year! The authors and artists all bring their A-game to this fest, making it so hard to narrow down the choices of which ones to rec. But I persevered, and bring you my favorite works of fic and art from HD-erised 2015 :)

Fic Recs:

favicon Solder by [livejournal.com profile] oakstone730 ( NC-17 | 35,000 ) 29-Dec-2015
Summary: Seven years ago, Harry disappeared out of Draco and Scorpius's life without a trace after Harry's addictions destroyed his and Draco's marriage. Now, Harry’s back, and Draco wants to believe he’s changed. But Harry isn’t the only one haunted by the past.

favicon Incongruent by [livejournal.com profile] agentmoppet ( NC-17 | 41,000 ) 28-Dec-2015

favicon A Convenient Impracticality by [livejournal.com profile] firethesound ( NC-17 | 38,000 ) 1-Dec-2015

Confused? Harry is too, but when has anything with Draco Malfoy ever been as straightforward as it seems?

favicon I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor by [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore ( NC-17 | 28,000 ) 18-Dec-2015
Summary: Harry felt lit up from inside as soon as he entered the bar. There were blokes dancing together, their bodies close to one another, not keeping a wary distance as Harry was always careful to do when he was near another man. God, he wanted this – wanted it so much he could taste it, a metallic tang of heat and desire. He suspected nothing would ever be the same again – especially when he saw who else was in the room.

Art Recs:

A Night At The Leaky Cauldron by [livejournal.com profile] isinuyasha ( PG | Photoshop ) 10-Dec-2015
Summary: It took a while for Draco to notice that he didn't really mind that Potter kept dragging him along to these "cozy" after work get-togethers at the Leaky Cauldron.
This is so great. I love how the artist drew all of Harry and Draco's friends, and still kept the focus on the two of them. And the way Harry is leaning in to whisper to Draco just says so much about the closeness of their relationship. Everybody looks so great and the holiday lights in the background are so festive! Wonderful job all around :)
Snowy Snogfest by [livejournal.com profile] mybutterflower (mitsouparker) ( PG | Digital Painting ) 25-Dec-2015
Summary: Draco & Harry are snogging in the snow after shopping in Hogsmeade.
This is absolutely stunning! I love how absorbed in each other they are (evidenced by the spilled candies!), and the lovely color scheme and soft-focus background. The contrast between Draco's hair and Harry's hair is perfect too, and the whole scene is so amazingly holiday appropriate. A gorgeous and beautiful piece of art!

Note: Authors and artists are still anonymous. Names will be added after the reveals!

I was so excited Monday night to see that my [livejournal.com profile] hd_owlpost gifts had posted! And how lucky am I? I got three amazingly awesome gifts in three different media - fic, art, and video!

Fic: New Dawn's Light by [livejournal.com profile] lauren3210
Word Count: 3200
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Harry seeks a meeting with Draco after the war.

What a beautiful story! I love how well it captures the sense of the lyrics "And how can I blame you / When it's me I can't forgive?" from The Unforgiven III. When the author wrote, "There are lots of dates that they have to avoid each other for. Harry doesn’t think he’ll ever know how to change that." it was just so poignant.

I also love the idea of Before and After here. And this line:

Maybe there should be a different category for some people to fit themselves into, a group called something like, Managed To Survive a War After Watching Loads Of My Friends Die, Now What The Fuck Do I Do?

Just sums up how Harry feels so perfectly!

And then the ending is so lovely - especially how Draco says that they should have been doing this from the start. Ah, those foolish, foolish, boys :)

Art: Something Old, Something New by [livejournal.com profile] awickedmemory
Medium: Digital art - comic
Rating: G
Prompt: "I've been wanting to do that since 4th year"

I love this! It's wonderfully drawn and depicts a great moment.

I think it's awesome how the artist interpreted my prompt: "I've been wanting to do that since 4th year"! I never would have thought of that myself, but it works perfectly. I enjoyed this so much!!

Video: Hold On by [livejournal.com profile] knowmefirst
Music: Stay by Rhianna
Rating: PG-13
Summary: A video of Harry and Draco

Oh this is awesome! All the best Drarry moments from the 6th and 7th movies set to a terrifically moving song!

I'm so impressed by the video editing skills here and can't imagine the time it must have taken to put something like this together. I think the editor's choice to keep it all black and white helps tie it all together cohesively and matches the tone of the song.

Thanks so much to the creators of these excellent gifts - they really made my day!
