HPFandom and TheHexFiles are looking for volunteers!



The fanfiction archives HPFandom and TheHexFiles are both looking for volunteers to help move fics over to Archive Of Our Own (AO3) using the Open Doors project.

separatrix, HPF & THF's owner, will not be able to take on this project herself due to health issues so it's up to us fans to come together and move as much as we can in only 3 months before both sites close permanently.

If you are seriously interested in helping out please drop a comment at either hpfdotnet or hex_companion and let us know.

The archives use an early version of eFiction so each chapter has a different ID number so chaptered fics will need to be imported differently than oneshots.

Is the migration to AO3 still the plan. I am a bit confused about what Separatrix wants to do?

Yeah, reading through the various threads on the original post is a little confusing. If I understand things correctly, all separatrix needs to do is to tell the powers that be at AO3 that she consents to the transfer of files, and I think she agreed to do that. Then the people at Open Doors will contact - who? I'm not quite sure of this - to get things rolling.

Later this evening when I have some time, I'm going to go read through the info about transferring stuff through Open Doors and make sure I understand it all, and I'll double-check the original post to see what's up.

Separatix posted an update that sounds as if she does not want to go through with the migration to AO3. Which is a pity, really, because even if she can keep the Hex Files and HP Fandom up for another three months or so, the archives will have to be moved to AO3 at one point or close down.

When the (Tolkien archive) Henneth Annûn Story Archive migrated to AO3, the Open Door people asked everybody who hosted fic at HASA to move their own stories. There was a list of people who had moved their stories to AO3, and volunteers only transferred the rest of the stories. Transferring is the simple act of uploading from existing url. It's work but it's not complicated.

I'm with you. Migrating the stories to AO3 is really the preferable option for the long term, and with people volunteering, shouldn't be hardly any work for separatrix herself.

I really hope that some of the other commenters will be able to convince her to go along with the transfer to AO3. As much as I love thehexfiles and hpfandom, given all the issues they've been having over the past couple of years they are simply not going to be reliable long term. It is only a matter of time before we'll be at a crisis point again.

This was an excellent idea, and I wish I could help out. I went to the site to move my fics since I already have an AO3 account and it refuses to even let me log in. I can't even bring up my member page on HPFandom.

Thanks so much for trying to be helpful! From what I understand (and I think it's been highly confusing) the site owner separatrix is currently doing some form of site update and has seemed to change her mind about transferring to AO3. (See vaysh's comment above).

Supposedly the site will be back up shortly. I still believe transferring the archive to AO3 would be the best long-term option. If you're still willing to transfer your works once the site is back online, I think that would be terrific.

hpfandom.net was the first archive I ever really read fic at. I read Vorabiza's Secrets there, and Malfoy Flavor (still a favorite), as well as this AU one that was never finished, The Loft.
