Once again it's time to find out Who tops more in hd-smoochfest fics, Draco or Harry?

This is the second set of HD-fest data we've looked at, the first being data from [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair, and the results of that study can be found here. (The impetus for that project came from my original "Who Tops More" post).

If you want to know more about how all of this data was collected and labeled, see the FAQ I wrote up for the hd-fan-fair project. All of it still holds true for the hd-smoochfest project as well.

The data from HD-fan-fair included 231 fics from 5 years of fests, while [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest includes 348 fics from 6 years of fests. So this was a bigger project providing much more data than before. Huge thanks once again to (in alpha order) [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit, [livejournal.com profile] frnklymrshnkly, [livejournal.com profile] germankitty, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene, [livejournal.com profile] iwao, [livejournal.com profile] khalulu, [livejournal.com profile] laurelgreengras, [livejournal.com profile] lordhellebore, and [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka for being awesome and contributing to the spreadsheet. I'm constantly amazed at all we've been able to accomplish through crowd-sourcing! If I left out anyone who contributed, please let me know so I can thank you too!

Once again, that's just about all I can do in terms of analysis - I don't do sociology or psychology, so please let me know what it all means to you in the comments :)

As before, I'm very interested in continuing this project with data from another fest. If people aren't bored yet and would be interested in contributing to a third crowd-sourcing project, please let me know! The next fest I'd like to tackle would be [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays/[livejournal.com profile] hd_erised, but those are HUGE fests, and would be even more work. So if there's not enough interest to sustain it, better I know that now. Who's with me?

Sorry for the delay in updating the status of the HD-smoochfest Crowd-Sourcing Data Project - I was away at a conference last week, and took a while to get back into the swing of things.

But you guys are awesome as usual! My last progress report was two weeks ago, and at that time we still had 37 NC-17 or R rated fics that needed top/bottom data. As of today, we're down to just ONE!

Thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit, [livejournal.com profile] iwao, [livejournal.com profile] khalulu, [livejournal.com profile] frnklymrshnkly, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene, [livejournal.com profile] laurelgreengras, [livejournal.com profile] lordhellebore, and [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka for all their hard work. You guys are amazing! And please let me know if I've forgotten to thank anyone who contributed!

So I'm getting ready to tally the data and create pretty charts. However, first I'm going to go through and double-check some of the fics that are currently listed as "bottom so-and-so implied" or "implied switching" or really, implied anything, to make sure that I count these fics in keeping with how we did it last time (and consistent with the poll results from last time).

I encourage everyone to have a look through the data as well and see if you spot any errors or labels you disagree with (find the link in this post, or PM me). Note that just like with the data from [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair, the first word in the top/bottom field indicates how I will count the fic. If it says "bottom!Draco (implied)" then that will be counted as a bottom!Draco fic. If it says "switching; mostly bottom!Harry" then that will be counted as a switching fic. Etc.

Nothing is final yet, so if you see something you disagree with, now is the time to let me know. Either leave a comment below, or make a note in the spreadsheet (bolded or highlighted in some way so I will see it). I'd like to be able to post the final results by Sunday, if I can. Maybe Monday :)

Who Tops More in HD-smoochfest: Final Results
snowgall: (close-up)
Just a quick update on the status of the HD-smoochfest Crowd-Sourcing Data Project for anyone interested. A week and a half ago we still had 76 NC-17 or R rated fics that needed top/bottom data. As of today, we're down to just 37!

I'm going to be out of town for most of this coming week, starting Saturday, and won't be able to post much in the interim. But if the pace keeps up as it has been, then there's a good chance the spreadsheet top/bottom data for Smoochfest will be complete by the time I get back, and won't that be great! So hopefully I can do a full report in about a week and a half.

Thanks so much to [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit, [livejournal.com profile] khalulu, [livejournal.com profile] frnklymrshnkly, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene, [livejournal.com profile] laurelgreengras, [livejournal.com profile] lordhellebore, and [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka for all their hard work so far. You guys are amazing!

Once again, I invite anyone interested to take a look at the spreadsheet (find the link in this post, or PM me) and enter data for any fics you may have read. There are just 37 fics that we lack top/bottom data on!

**If you add or change any data, it is helpful to leave a note in the "data entry by" column so I know who to thank and what has been added. You can also add a comment right in the same cell if there's data you disagree with. Just highlight anything you do so I can see it and make a note of it. Thanks again for all the help so far!

Update #2 for those interested in the status of the HD-smoochfest Crowd-Sourcing Data Project where we're hoping to once again answer the burning question: Who tops more?

Click for background info )

In progress report #1, I noted we were still lacking info on 128 fics rated R or NC-17. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit, [livejournal.com profile] khalulu, [livejournal.com profile] frnklymrshnkly, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene, [livejournal.com profile] lordhellebore, and [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka we are now down to just 76 after just one week. That is so awesome!

As always, if I left anyone else out, please let me know so I can thank you!

Who Tops More in HD-smoochfest: Final Results
snowgall: (close-up)
In case you didn't know, we have started a new crowd-sourcing project! This time we are gathering data on all fics posted to [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest from 2009-2014. Once again, the initial goal is to get more information to find out Who tops more?, but there's no reason these datasets couldn't be used to answer any number of interesting fandomstats questions in the future.

Background: Inspired by the comments on my original Who Tops More post, I decided to try running the same analysis just on the fics written for the [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair fest from 2009-2014. Crowd-sourcing that data was a smashing success and you can read about the results here.

Once again I have set up a public Google spreadsheet where anyone who wants to can help fill in the gaps in the data. It's actually at the same URL as the first dataset, just in a new sheet beneath it. (Note: my original post suggesting the crowd-sourcing is f-locked to hide the spreadsheet URL from vandals, but if anyone is interested in helping with this project, just PM me so I can send you the link).

There are 348 fics from six years of Smoochfest now listed in the table (with huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit for helping add over 200 fics to my original list!) When I opened the sheet for crowd-sourcing 4 days ago, we still needed top/bottom data on 147 fics rated R or NC-17. Since then, [livejournal.com profile] frnklymrshnkly, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene, [livejournal.com profile] khalulu, [livejournal.com profile] lordhellebore, and [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka have whittled that number down to 128 (also adding data on several low-rated fics, and timeframe and theme data as well). As always, if I inadvertently left out anyone who contributed, please let me know so I can thank you.

Note that the dataset for HD Smoochfest is one and a half times larger than the dataset was for HD fan-fair (348 fics vs. 231) so this will be a commensurately larger project. But I know we can do it! The more people who contribute (the more 'crowd'-like we are) the less any one person has to do.

So even if you can only add one piece of information to our dataset, that is valuable and worthwhile. Just take a look at the spreadsheet (find the link in this post, or PM me) and enter data for any fics you may have read; every contribution is greatly appreciated.

**If you add or change any data, it is helpful to leave a note in the "data entry by" column so I know who to thank and what has been added. You can also add a comment right in the same cell if there's data you disagree with. Just highlight anything you do so I can see it and make a note of it. Thanks so much for all the help so far!

Who Tops More in HD-smoochfest: Final Results
snowgall: (close-up)
It's the time you've all been waiting for, where we learn Who tops more in hd-fan-fair fics, Draco or Harry?

The impetus for this project came from my original "Who Tops More" post, where I looked at nearly 1500 fics from my own personal database. That post generated a ton of feedback in the comments, which made me decide to run the numbers again, this time looking at just the fics written for the [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair fest, which has run since 2009, with a gap in 2011.

The results are at the bottom of this post. Before I get to them, I just want to explain FAQ-style how this project came about and how the data was collected and labeled.

Why use data from hd-fan-fair? What's so special about that fest?

I'm going to go work up the results and make some charts and graphs now. I invite you to take a look at the completed spreadsheet (find the link in this post, or PM me) and let me know ASAP if you find any errors. Note that I also went through and adjusted a few of the entries in the top/bottom field to better reflect the poll results, so you might want to double-check those fics if you're interested.

Off to do some math now :)

Edit: final results have now been posted!

A poll to see how best to label fics: top, bottom, or switching?

We are so close to having completed our [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair spreadsheet with all of the information on who tops in each fic! As of today, we are only missing information on 12 fics rated R or NC-17.

Thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] cabinetcaligari, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit, [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes, and [livejournal.com profile] khalulu who have all added lots more information in just the last few days. If I missed anyone who contributed, please let me know!

(For anyone who hasn't followed the "Who Tops More" project, you can get caught up here, here, and here. Only the first post with the spreadsheet link is f-locked. If you want the link, just PM me.)

Once the last of the data is entered, I can run the numbers. However, there are several cases where the question of "who tops" could be debatable. I'll be honest: my personal opinion is that what matters for the top/bottom designation is only the sex that occurs on screen between Harry and Draco during the course of the story. However, this is a group project, and I want input from the group as to how to best make these decisions. Therefore, I am conducting a poll!

As I see it, there are 5 types of cases to consider. Each case listed below is followed by several examples from the hd-fan-fair fics to help illustrate the point.

Case 1 )

Case 2 )

Case 3 )

Case 4 )

Case 5 )

Thanks again to everyone who has helped on this project so far, and also to [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes, who helped me with thinking about these poll questions.

And it seems awfully fitting that today is the first day of the [livejournal.com profile] dracotops_harry fest, don't you think? :)

Update #2 for those interested in the status of the HD-fan-fair Crowd-Sourcing Data Project where we're hoping to find the answer to the burning question: Who tops more?

Click for background info )

In the previous progress report, I noted we were still lacking info on 66 fics rated R or NC-17 and only had inferential info for 20 more. In the four days since then, many more volunteers stepped up to fill in some of the gaps. Thanks to (in alpha order) [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit, [livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion, [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes, [livejournal.com profile] gracerene, [livejournal.com profile] iwao, [livejournal.com profile] khalulu, and [livejournal.com profile] vaysh, 36 more fics got complete info, leaving us with only 46 blanks and 4 partials. (I think [livejournal.com profile] cabinetcaligari helped too, but may not have left their name on the spreadsheet. If I left anyone else out, please let me know so I can thank you!)

The power of crowd-sourcing is truly awesome!

Hopefully soon we will have all the data we need so I can run the topping/bottoming numbers. But with all the data we *do* have, I can give you a quickie analysis of what proportion of the [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair fest fics are rated NC-17, R, PG-13, or PG.

Year G/PG PG-13 R NC-17 Total
2009 05 (07%) 15 (21%) 18 (25%) 34 (47%) 72
2010 05 (10%) 13 (26%) 12 (24%) 20 (40%) 50
2012 02 (06%) 07 (18%) 07 (18%) 22 (58%) 38
2013 04 (12%) 12 (35%) 06 (18%) 12 (35%) 34
2014 01 (03%) 17 (46%) 05 (13%) 14 (38%) 37

I don't have anything pithy to say about these numbers; if anyone else does, leave a comment :) Just one caveat: though the number of fics posted to the fest dropped significantly after 2009, it is important to note that since 2010 the number of HD fests throughout the year has gone way up. So perhaps less fics are posted to each fest, but there are many more fests to post to!

Once again, I invite anyone interested to take a look at the spreadsheet (find the link in this post, or PM me) and enter data for any fics you may have read. There are just 46 fics that we lack top/bottom data on!

**If you add or change any data, it is helpful to leave a note in the "data entry by" column so I know who to thank and what has been added. You can also add a comment right in the same cell if there's data you disagree with. Just highlight anything you do so I can see it and make a note of it. Thanks again for all the help so far!

Who Tops More in HD-fan-fair: Final Results
snowgall: (close-up)
This is just to update those interested in the status of the HD-fan-fair Crowd-Sourcing Data Project where we're hoping to find the answer to the burning question: Who tops more?

Background: Inspired by the comments on my Who Tops More post, I have decided to try running the same analysis just on the fics written for the [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair fest from 2009-2014. But I need to get the complete set of data first, so I set up a public Google spreadsheet in the hopes of crowd-sourcing it. Anyone who wants to can add to the spreadsheet and help fill in the gaps in the data. (Note: my original post suggesting the crowd-sourcing is f-locked to hide the spreadsheet URL from vandals, but if anyone is interested in helping with this project, just PM me so I can send you the link).

My original spreadsheet only contained data for 111 fics from the fests, out of 228 231. I didn't even have the titles or URLs for the rest. But after my call for help, [livejournal.com profile] cagnurit came through like a champ and over the weekend entered the rest of the needed title/author/URL/date/summary data for the 120 missing fics. She also added topping and bottoming information for several of these fics and others as well. [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore also added some top/bottom info, and I went through and made sure all the data was consistently formatted and clearer for visitors.

So at this point, we have complete information on 'who tops' for 64 fics rated R or NC-17. For another 20 R/NC-17 fics, [livejournal.com profile] capitu gave no 'bottom' tags in her recs, so I have assumed there was no penetration. What we're still missing is top/bottom information on 66 remaining fics rated R or NC-17.

That's it. Just 66 fics. I have highlighted in light red the records in the spreadsheet we still need info for. I invite you to take a look at the spreadsheet (find the link in this post, or PM me) and enter data for any fics you may have read.

**If you add or change any data, it would be helpful to leave a note in the "data entry by" column so I know who to thank and what has been added. You can also add a comment right in the same cell if there's data you disagree with. Just highlight anything you do so I can see it and make a note of it. Thanks so much for all the help so far!
