Soul-mates AU rec: Deamus

Oh my god guys, I'm about to rec an HP fic that is (a) non-Drarry and (b) PG-rated. What is the world coming to?

Title: Hiding Scrawl, Licking Freckles, and Other Average Wizard Things

Rating: PG-13 (AO3 says 'G' but there's some language)

Summary: Someone out there is obsessed with his freckles, and damn it, Seamus Finnigan wants to know who.

I came across this fic on AO3 with Drarry as a background pairing so I thought I'd give it a try and I'm so glad I did. This was charming and delightful and wonderful and just all the positive adjectives. It uses the soul-mates AU trope, wherein everyone has some magical writing on their body identifying the thoughts of their soul mate to them, albeit cryptically. Seamus' mark usually just says "lick his freckles" and Harry's just spouts insults!

This is the story of how Seamus and Dean figured out that they were each other's soulmates. The author promises to write a follow-up Drarry sequel soon, and I can't wait!

P.S. to dicta_contrion: this is the sort of thing people mean when they ask for soul-mates AU fics :) There just haven't been that many Drarry fics in this AU. Maybe some wonderful people on my flist will be inspired to write some!

Yay! And it's a little new to me too. The details vary a bit author to author. Sometimes the mark consists of the first words your soulmate will say to you, so some people might have "Hi, what's your name?" and they're like, crap, that's no help at all! Or it could be some other sort of identifying mark, and generally the idea is that the two people involved have to figure it out :)

Yeah, I first learned about it from a friend who's into the 'Once Upon a Time' fandom, where it's more common. There's a lot of variations too.

I do know of one Drarry fic that uses a similar trope (soul mate markings, but no words) and that's A Tale of Woo by veritas03, which is a really good fic as well.

But now I want even more :)

I read this fantastic one in the Sherlock fandom where the soul-mark was the person's name - so Sherlock's was 'John' and John's was 'Sherlock' at first and then changed every time Sherlock used an alias. It was so romantic and sweet. alkdfja;lskdj

But never having watched Sherlock, I had no idea what "post-Reichenbach" meant. I assume that has something to do with his 6-month presumed-dead absence? Because that confused me :) As did John's mutable sexuality. But the concept was cool and it was well written ♥

I'm not sure if you read Marauder era fics at all, but if you do, you could check out The Electric Fizzing Prick Pistols, or Whatever by whitmans_kiss which is one of my HP favourites within this trope :)

Thanks for the rec! That was very well done too. It's so interesting to see these little variations in how the identifying marks show up. And this fic had the added benefit of explaining how James and Lily got together, which is always a question I want answered :) (I saw you had prompted James/Lily for rarepairs and I had hoped someone would have picked it!)
