First times are some my favorite parts of fanfic, because there is so much emotion that can be caught up in that moment and it can reveal so much about how these characters feel about each other. And lucky for us, there is a plethora of amazing fanfic written which explores all the many possibilities for Harry and Draco's first time.

The possibilities illustrated in these fics are really quite varied. Some first times take place during Hogwarts, some afterwards, some fics start with them already in a relationship and some don't, and a variety of acts are considered 'first time sex' - it doesn't always have to be full penetration.

But I did have some requirements to narrow this set down to a reasonable size!

These fics all feature:

  • A first time that is earnest and meaningful for both of them (so no hate sex, or sex pollen, or PWP)
  • Both boys as virgins
  • Appropriate amounts of awkwardness/fumbling/cluelessness/trying to figure things out (no instant sex gods here!)

More bonding fic recs! This set is divided into two subtypes:
  • Soulmate Connections - where Harry and Draco are destined to be together and just have to discover that fact
  • Wand Connections - where the fact that Harry used Draco's wand to kill Voldemort forges a bond which brings them together
Unlike my first set of bonding fics, these fics aren't limited to 8th year, although several 8th year fics still snuck in :)

This set of recs is a little bit of a departure for me, because I'm usually all about the sex (quelle surprise!), or at the very least, the romance. But every so often you find a nice little pre-slash story, and when it's done well, it still gives you all the feels :) If only they didn't have to end so soon!

As 2015 is the last year of the [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane fest, I thought I'd go back through and rec some of the best Drarry fics from all of the past nine years of the fest. I'll be splitting the recs up into four posts: 2007-2009 (this post), 2010-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015.

Note that this fest also includes Snarry, Snarco, and threesome combinations, but I'm just reccing Drarry.

2007
Volunteers by [livejournal.com profile] annafugazzi, PG-13, 52,000 words
Summary: Harry, Draco, and a volunteer position that was supposed to be quick and easy.
This is such a lovely story. Draco has been living as a muggle for several years after having spent 9 months in Azkaban, while Harry is a widower with a small child; both are terribly lonely and turn to volunteer work as a way of venturing back into the wizarding word. They find themselves partnered together as Ministry liaisons for the upcoming Beltane celebrations and in the course of working together learn to see each other in a new light. Wonderful characterizations, a slow burn and hopeful, hesitant beginnings make for an excellent read.

All I Want by [livejournal.com profile] luthien82, R, 1,600 words
Summary: He loves the way Harry feels under him, how their bodies fit together like two puzzle pieces.
Well-written, and an interesting idea for non-canon post-HBP, though I did wonder just how Harry and Draco were able to get together if it's wartime and everything must be so secretive.

2008
Cerulean Blue by [livejournal.com profile] annafugazzi & [livejournal.com profile] scrtkpr, NC-17, 28,000 words
Summary: When Potions Professor Draco Malfoy has an accident that costs him the last four years of his memory, Harry Potter, with the grudging assistance of Severus Snape's portrait, is the only one who can help him.
Everything about this was excellent--Draco's attitude when he had lost his memories, the memories themselves as Potter explored them, and the awkwardness afterwards. And I love how portrait!Snape is written here. The fantasy of a threesome with Snape isn't realy my thing, but then, this is an HDS fest, and it was short and easily skipped :)

favicon The Rabbit and the God by [livejournal.com profile] who_la_hoop, PG-13, 19,000 words (fest link)
Summary: When Draco Malfoy goes missing, in the most peculiar of ways, frustrated Auror-in-training Harry Potter goes on a search for his absentee enemy that leads him to Muggle Japan – and to a mystery that will take more than magic to solve.
The relationship development is excellent and lovely, the hesitancy and the depth of feeling well portrayed. And their discussions about the past and Draco's role and his mark are all wonderful connections to canon.

2009
favicon An Inconvenient View by [livejournal.com profile] curiouslyfic, PG-13, 5,700 words (fest link)
Summary: There is, by Merlin, some Slytherin future that's not all raging fires and death. She knows because she's seen the porn.
Wow, this fic. It's very different from your typical HD story. It's all Pansy's POV--she's taking divination in 6th year and is getting (real) glimpses of the future. Some scenes she sees we know about from the books, and some scenes take place after the war showing Harry and Draco together (which Pansy is less surprised about than you might think). But it's frustrating for her, and a little bit for us, because she only gets glimpses and can't control what she sees or understand when it takes place and what she should do about it. But it's fascinating. The way the author shows us fractured scenes makes the reader feel just as impatient and eager for more as Pansy. Beautiful, poignant, and hopeful too. And Pansy (and Trelawney!) feel totally in character. (extended rec at hd-storyroom)

Sex On Fire by [livejournal.com profile] gypsyflame, NC-17, 11,875 words
Summary: A life-threatening injury brings Malfoy back into Harry’s life.
I liked so much about this--their dialogue, the connection to the fiendfire event in DH, the subtle humor, and how she set up and fired her Chekov's guns. And the ending was nice and hot, even though it seemed to arrive a little too quickly.

So as part of my plan to count the number of fics posted to fests each year (see chart), I've been chasing down masterlists of all the HD fests I know of ([livejournal.com profile] hp_masterlists and Vaysh's lists have been extremely helpful). At times it has been necessary to re-create a masterlist for a fest, like I did here and here. But there is still one fest that seems to have been lost to time: The Eros Affair Third Wave.

There was a prompt list, and over 50 people signed up to create fics and art. The first fic of the fest was dutifully posted on July 24, 2007 here (f-locked), and then so far as I can tell, the next thing on the site is an admin post from [livejournal.com profile] bookshop on August 13, 2007. She explains certain technical difficulties due to livejournal's policies and says the plan is to upload the rest of the fest's fics to a message board on her website. If this message board exists, I can't find it, or any links to the fics in any centralized location. (I did send an ask to Aja's tumblr account, as she seems more active there, but I haven't heard back Edit: she commented below, yay! But I would still appreciate any information anyone else might have).

And from time to time I have come across fics posted to various archives where the author's note says the fic was written for the third wave of The Eros Affair. So it makes me think it might be possible to re-create a masterlist. But I'll need help.

Here's what I have so far:

But that's just 12 works out of over 50 claims. I think there's probably more. Below is the remainder of the claim list. I'm hoping that some of you who have been part of the fandom for longer than me might know where some of these fics/artwork might be hiding, or if they even exist.

...and want to read the fic it's based on, but can't because it's not based off of any existing fanfic. Well, if you just desperately want to read a fanfic where Harry helps Draco change/remove his Dark Mark then I can rec a couple of fics for you:

Those are the two best fics I know of that involve Harry in changing Draco's Mark. If that's not enough for you, I know of two others which are decent reads as well:

What follows is a list of my picks for the best Drarry fanfiction of mid 2007 - 2008
(26 fics, sorted by date published)

Updated December 18, 2016

Note: There are so many lists of favorite Harry/Draco fanfiction, but I wanted to do something a little different. Rather than create a list based on genre or length or era or whatever, I've decided to do a series of "best-of X year" lists. This means the year the work was published not the year I read it.

This list spans 1 1/2 years because I wanted to begin with fics published after Deathly Hallows was published in July 2007.

More lists:

2007-8 list )

General notes:

  • The "original post" column provides links to the first place I can find evidence of the work online. However, it can be really tough to determine when and where a work was first published (see my rant here: Dates Matter). So it could be that a fic was actually published earlier somewhere else and I didn't know it. Corrections are welcome.
  • I've read a lot of HD fiction, but I certainly haven't read it all, so if I've left off something you think I shouldn't have, I'm happy for you to let me know.
  • I may continue to add works to this list but I will try to keep the total number to 35 or less (for this list, 25 for other years). (On the challenge of maintaining lists)
  • My goal is to add lists for other years as well, time permitting.

How my fic preferences will skew the lists:

  • I tend to like fics which contain explicit sex, so the list will probably skew that way. However, I prefer that there be an actual plot, not just sex, and I read PG rated fics too--just fewer of them.
  • I like almost all the standard tropes, but I don't usually go for non-magical AUs, unhappy endings, dark!fic, or threesomes.
  • I don't give a toss who's on top or bottom, so you'll find both here.
  • I shy away from epic-length fanfiction unless I'm very confident in the author, so most of my recs will be less than 100,000 words.
