Rec list for all the tropes :)

Yesterday vaysh got everyone on a Trope Meme kick, which was tons of fun. And then in a comment thread, she went and said:

"It would actually be fun to make rec lists of fics to go with the trope. It would take ages, though. :)

So you know me. If Vaysh makes an off-hand comment, I'm tempted to go do the thing :) (see: Who Tops More?)

So I went through the original list of 28 tropes and tried to find a representative (and awesome) HD rec for each one, while also trying not to duplicate any fics. But I decided that the original list was inadequate.

• Some tropes needed to be renamed to more clearly fit HP (e.g. "High School/Uni AU" --> "8th year")
• Some tropes needed to have subcategories within the trope (e.g. "Vampires/Werewolves AU" --> "Creature!fic" --> Veela, Werewolf, Vampire, etc.)

Once I did that, however, I felt like too many good fics were not being represented, so I added a bunch of additional HP tropes (second list at the end). All in all, I've recced 66 fics from 56 authors!

And even after all of that, there are still 4 tropes from the list that I could not think of any recs for:

• Coffee House AU/Food Service AU
• Fake Out Make Out
• Incest
• Selfcest

"Incest" and "Selfcest" really don't make sense for HD, but if anyone has good recs for the other two, let me know! (Coffee House AU is just not my thing, and I couldn't think of any examples of Fake Out Make Out :)

And also let me know if you think I missed any important tropes or fics that should have been recced instead

This is awesome! I always wanted to see the old Guns N Handcuffs list updated and once thought about taking it on, but quickly realized I haven't the skill or the connections to do it right. But I do think it's time for a good new list of fics that fit into various cliches and tropes, along with current, working links. I rely so heavily on recs, as I have limited time and I don't follow every single fest. The only way I hear of some of the awesome fics are through word of mouth and recs. Good work!! I'm really glad you are doing it.

I feel like Ignatiustrout's Here's the Pencil Make it Work would be a good coffee house au :) Since Draco ends up working in a coffee shop, if I remember correctly... Oh and Emma Grant's Left My Heart, I believe there was something to do with a coffee shop?

Another thought: Maybe compiling the rec list little by little wouldn't be too hard if you did, for example, a post every week on the harrydraco com, and also in places like accio-hd-fics and asked people for recs in the comments. Each post pertaining to each trope, of course.

Ah, but that would be a different project altogether. For this, I was mostly challenging myself to see if I could come up with precisely one fic for each trope, while not duplicating fics and also (as a secondary challenge) showcasing as many authors and fics as possible.

Of course I cheated a little bit by splitting tropes into subtropes and adding more tropes that I thought were missing. I'm sneaky that way :)

Here's where I have to embarrassingly admit that I haven't read "Black Coffee" (see above where I mention that coffee house AUs aren't my thing). I've seen it recced everywhere, and I keep meaning to read it (and I love femme's fics too!) it's just that I mostly don't enjoy non-magical AUs, so every time I think "maybe I'll read this now" I put it off and read something else.

I have literally read over a thousand fics but not that one. I'm terrible.

They're rarely non-magical though -- well, granted, femme's definitely is, but that's a rarity, I think. I mean, generally, the very few we've got, they seem to be (more often than not, because yeah, there are definitely some that are completely non-magical, but more often than not) about one of them being sick of his life, deciding to open a café in the Muggle world (while still being a wizard), running into the other one in the Muggle world (generally Draco, who's been exiled after the war or something, etc.)

I'd link you more but... afraid it's not my favourite trope either :( I've read a few more over the years, but those are really the only ones I ever saved.

You're right about them being mostly non-magical AUs. And I've read some of these too, but they often aren't my faves either. It probably doesn't help that I don't actually like coffee? I'm so weird! But it means that when an author goes into detail about the mechanics of making/serving/ordering coffee, my eyes kinda glaze over :) I don't get any of it!

Oh yes, true. I'm also a bit nutty when it comes to disability fics. Sometimes I feel like the disability takes over the story, so that the fic is no longer focused enough on Harry/Draco but becomes about the disability instead. But on the other hand, if the disability isn't treated intelligently and with respect, then I get all frustrated and angry about that too. So you can't win with me.

But I'll add it to the list I think. I'll probably post an edited list in a few days.

I'm not sure if it counts as self-cest, but I've run into polyjuice and time turner h/h/d And d/d/h situations in fic. There is also the fic (and I'm completely blanking on the title, but I'm pretty sure it's by romaine) where Draco is working at Hogwarts and seeing a Harry provided by the room of requirement and then real Harry comes and I think there's a threesome?

Haven't read Hades Paradox, but I *have* read and liked Jolene. It was hard picking one fic to represent genderbender. I wanted to split the trope into genderbent!Draco and genderbent!Harry and then realized that like 90% of genderbender fics have genderbent!Draco, and while I've read a few with Harry, none of them were standouts to me.

But I will probably not have read them :/ It's rather a squick for me (both threesomes and selfcest, so putting them together is the worst). Well I always like recs :) But I will only be adding fics to this list for tropes I missed or for tropes that should have been subdivided or if a truly better representative fic is suggested. For this particular project, I wasn't trying to compile a list of all the best (say) sex pollen fics, just trying to find precisely one fic for each trope (or for each subdivision of a trope) without duplicating fics and also trying to showcase as many authors as I could while also picking truly reccable fics :) It was a bit of a mini-challenge to myself ♥

For a moment yesterday, I considered doing this, one fic for each trope but I quickly gave up, lol. I didn't think I could come up with an example for some of the tropes I dislike or don't like much.

Would body swap fics count as self-cest? Like the kind where they end up getting it on with each other while still in each other's bodies? I was sort of surprised to not see that on the tropes list, actually.

I think body-swap is definitely an avenue towards selfcest. Unfortunately (for me) I really really don't like it when bodyswapped characters get it on with each other before swapping back. I mean, closing their eyes for a few kisses and such is fine, but full-on sex and getting all turned on by their own body is just kind of a squick for me. (What does work for me in this scenario is masturbation because you're turned on by the body that you're in)

But I definitely agree that body-swap should be a trope on the list! I will probably add that one in a few days, but I will probably not rec a fic where they go as far as self-cest in it :)

LOL, actually I don't! I'm with you- it's not a trope I'm a big fan of, especially when they get it on with each other....just not my thing. I even have difficulties with them getting off solo in the swapped body, I think because consent can be sort of squicky thing for me. Which is strange, because I adore dub-con, but when a body swap is involved, it makes me sort of uncomfortable.

Though, one of my all time favorite fics in a diff fandom is a long body swap fic, and handles the issue really well. So you never know!

Well run, don't walk, and read "The Boy Who Only Lived Twice"! It's amazing. Really one of the best HD fics I've read. It's espionage for sure, though I don't think it counts as AU - it's compliant with all the books except the epilogue, and magic is used.

And you've managed to rec the one and only HD fic by lauren that I haven't yet read! I have this on my to-read list, and just haven't yet had the chance to read it. Looking forward to it!

Haha, that's the longest fic I've written for H/D, so I'm not surprised you haven't read it yet! Also I know the concept can be a bit off-putting for some people - I know I tend to think twice before reading a Role Reversal fic. But I hope you enjoy it if/when you decide to give it a go! :)

I don't really like coffee shop AU immensely as a trope, but the fics that sprung to mind when I was taking the test are such wonderful ones (clever people have linked them above) that it came up pretty high on my list just for that reason!

This is a great post. So many wonderful fics on this list; loads of my favourites and also quite a few I haven't read. *Adds them to the ever-growing list.* At some point I will find time for them all.

Also "Starts With A Spin" was a real flash back to the past for me. I originally read it when it as it was being published all those years ago and I'd forgotten all about it. I'm pretty convinced I read it on ff.net actually, but it doesn't seem to be there now and the author only mentions publishing on LJ so I might have imagined that part!

For the 'Unknown Identity' trope I quite like "When It Alteration Finds" by Momatu over on ff.net. In the story neither of them recognises the other and although it is set in the magical world and compliant up to the epilogue Harry actually owns a muggle bakery/coffee shop so sort of works for that trope too.
