What follows is a list of my picks for the best Drarry fanfiction of 2015
(37 fics, sorted by date published)

Note: There are so many lists of favorite Harry/Draco fanfiction, but I'm doing something a little different. Rather than create a list based on genre or length or era or whatever, I've decided to do a series of "best-of X year" lists. This means the year the work was published not the year I read it.

Once again, this list was hard to pare down! I read more fanfic published in 2015 than in any other year, and between my LJ blog and [livejournal.com profile] hd_storyroom, I recced 93 Drarry fics from 2015. Consequently lots of good fics aren't included on this list. In the end any list is just an arbitrary thing based on one person's no doubt flawed opinion. It says nothing about the quality of any fics not on it!

General notes:

  • The "original post" column provides links to the first place I can find evidence of the work online. However, it can be really tough to determine when and where a work was first published (see my rant here: Dates Matter). So it could be that a fic was actually published earlier somewhere else and I didn't know it. Corrections are welcome.
  • I've read a lot of HD fiction, but I certainly haven't read it all, so if I've left off something you think I shouldn't have, I'm happy for you to let me know.
  • I may continue to add works to this list but I will try to keep the total number to something reasonable. (On the challenge of maintaining lists)
  • My goal is to add lists for other years as well, time permitting.

How my fic preferences will skew the lists:

  • I tend to like fics which contain explicit sex, so the list will probably skew that way. However, I prefer that there be an actual plot, not just sex, and I read PG rated fics too--just fewer of them.
  • I like almost all the standard tropes, but I don't usually go for non-magical AUs, unhappy endings, dark!fic, or threesomes
  • I don't give a toss who's on top or bottom, so you'll find both here.
  • I shy away from epic-length fanfiction unless I'm very confident in the author, so most of my recs will be less than 100,000 words.

The final [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane reveals are now up, so I can finally post the stats I've been collecting on this fest!

First off some fun trivia:

  • [livejournal.com profile] megyal wrote a fic (or two!) for every single [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane fest from the beginning. That's 11 fics over 9 fests!

Two other authors have been nearly as prolific:

  • [livejournal.com profile] lomonaaeren wrote 12 fics over 8 fests. The only year she missed was 2007 (the first year).

  • [livejournal.com profile] twistedm also wrote for every year but one, missing 2009. She produced 10 fics over 8 fests.

The longest fic written for hds_beltane was [livejournal.com profile] annafugazzi's 52K Volunteers, written for the 2007 fest.

Since this was a fest that welcomed Drarry, Snarry, & Snaco pairings (as well as variations and threesomes) I was interested in knowing how many fics fell into each of these ships. Unsurprisingly, Drarry is the most popular ship for the fest, but I was surprised to find that threesomes and variations (which I counted together) were generally more popular than either of the other two ships, though Snarry came close. Snaco is rather the unloved second cousin, however, as some years there were no Snaco fics at all!

This is all much clearer to see with pretty charts and graphs. As I mentioned, trying to tease apart variations on Snape/Harry/Draco (is this a Snarry fic with a one-off Draco threesome, or a Drarry fic with a brief Snarry fling, or...you get the picture) was too complicated, so anything that involved all three boys in some way or another I called "Multi" and counted together. Many years included Gen fics too, so I counted those separately.

It is also nice to see that 2015, the final year of the fest, had more fics than the previous two years, which is a great send-off.

The [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane fest has now concluded; 2015 was its final round, but it went out with a great set of fics! I'm reccing my favorites from 2015 here, but see the end of this post for links to recs from past years as well.

Authors are currently anonymous. Names will be added after the reveals.

Note that this fest also includes Snarry, Snaco, and threesome combinations, but I'm just reccing Drarry.

favicon Green Beans and Fedoras by [livejournal.com profile] twistedm, R, 3,450 words (fest link)
Summary: Harry runs into someone unexpectedly, gets some weird advice, and decides to take it. What could possibly go wrong?
Let me tell you, I never knew how much I needed matchmaker!Snape until I read this fic :) Snape only plays a very small part in this fic, but it's a delightful part. He runs into Harry five years after the war, immediately sizes him up as lonely and bored, and proceeds to suggest he look up Draco Malfoy, who - as Snape informs him - is likewise gay and equally pathetic and lonely.
What I really love the most about this is how frank and forthright everyone is. It's SO refreshing to have the characters actually say what they mean instead of wallowing in miscommunication. Harry decides to take Snape's advice, and goes to ask Draco out on a date. The rest is snark and banter and delicious flirting. It's a short fic, but so very fun. (extended rec at hd-storyroom)

favicon Our place on the path unwinding by [livejournal.com profile] thisgirl_is & [livejournal.com profile] bakaknight, PG-13, 9,100 words (fest link)
Summary: Harry Potter goes looking for a fight and finds one. And possibly some other things along the way.
Cool story! I loved this Draco - confident and perceptive and droll - the perfect characterization :) And how he and Harry kept being drawn together, like they couldn't help themselves. And Harry! and how subtly we learned what he was! The imagery of the Beltane festival was perfect; it grounded the characters and the story but never got in the way. Them snogging against the tree was super hot, as was the slight morning after awkwardness that they both powered through. So enjoyable!

The rain has gone (I can see clearly now) by [livejournal.com profile] bakaknight, PG-13, 3,300 words
Gen: implied future Draco/Harry

Summary: To die would be an awfully big adventure, someone had said in a Muggle book Severus had once read with a friend at his shoulder, in a park, in a sunset, long ago. Right now, it's an adventure he wants absolutely no part in. Which makes it rather awkward that he’s already dead.
This was SUCH an interesting and moving story, beautifully written from the perspective of ghost!Snape right after the battle. We see ghost!Snape's initial interactions with McGonagall, Neville, Harry, and Draco, and it's a look at how these people would feel about Snape which is quite a bit different than usual. I think in most stories Harry is assumed to have reversed his opinion towards Snape, but here he is still resentful, and understandably so. And so is Neville, who wow, really gives ghost!Snape a dressing-down! Very cool.

As a retrospective, I have also gone back and recced some of the best Drarry fics from all of the past nine years of the fest. Enjoy!

Stay tuned for stats from nine years of hds_beltane :)

Because I'm curious about these things, I wondered which authors had been writing Drarry for the longest time. There have been literally thousands of Drarry fanfic authors over the years (not kidding: I've got over a thousand names in my database alone). So in order to find an answer to this question I decided to limit my results by these requirements:

  • The author should have published their first Drarry fic before Deathly Hallows came out on July 21, 2007
I needed some cut-off date to start with, and this seemed as reasonable a way to limit the list as any

  • Authors should still be currently writing Drarry
What this means for me is that an author will have published at least one new Drarry fic since May 1, 2014 (i.e. approximately in the last year)

  • Authors should have written at least five Drarry fics in this time period
I included this restriction because there were a few authors in my database who happened to have written one early Drarry and another one more recently but who usually write for other fandoms or ships. It didn't feel as comparable to the other authors on this list who had been more dependably Drarry/HP focused.

So who did I come up with using these restrictions?

List of Drarry veterans )

My database is large but not infinite. Any omissions are unintentional - if you know of an author who should be on this list who I didn't include, please let me know ASAP!

Keep in mind:
  • You might be wondering where [livejournal.com profile] faithwood and [livejournal.com profile] who_la_hoop are on this list. So far as I can tell, they published their first Drarry fics after DH came out. If I'm wrong about that, I would love to know it!

  • If an author has currently written a fic which is still anonymous for a fest, I can't know that, so I couldn't factor that in. I'm sorry if that means I left anyone off this list. Let me know after reveals, and I'll fix it.

  • Co-authorship sometimes messes up my search results (for *reasons*) so if an author co-authored early fics I might not have realized it and may have missed them in my search. Let me know and I'll add them in!

  • If an author's early fics aren't dated, then I can't know when they were published and so couldn't include them in my search. Please try to verify dates for me if you think I've missed someone. (Oh hey, another reason dates matter :)
